Serbian Mythology [2005–]
Serbian mythology consists of many original peculiarities, yet it is completely absent from contemporary mythologizing of Serbian identity. This is a surprising fact, since the mythical, pre-Christian understanding of the world still looms large over everyday life in Serbia. Many customs related to certain objects or phenomena, such as beliefs associated with traditionally important events, have an obvious mythical and non-Orthodox Christian basis. The complex blend of pagan heritage and Christianity, typical for Eastern Europe, was famously defined by Mirca Eliade as cosmic Christianity. Historical and contemporary censorship of this mythic element in the officially propagated version of Serbian spirituality may easily be one of the reasons for the traditionally chaotic state of Serbian society.
The starting point for creating this work, which may be interpreted as reverse ethnography, was the study of utilitarian, scientific photographs and photo-amateur material. The photographed objects and scenes belong to the ordinary, everyday visual experience; it may be said that the commonplace subjects of these photographs have been mythologized by the act of their taking. In this delineating process, they were connoted as equally important as rare ethnographic specimens. In contrast to the picturesque attraction of the amateur ethno photography, Serbian Mythology functions as explicit political message.
But, whether it is politics or religion, the mythological mechanism today serves the function of ideology. Although elements of Serbian mythology permeate these images, the goal of this work is not illustration, but recognition that false mythomania which leads to cultural discontinuity is directly related to the carefully prepared ignorance. Srpska mitologija [2005–]
Iako je specifičnost srpske mitologije dobro poznata naučna činjenica, ova mitologija izostavljena je iz mnogobrojnih savremenih mitologizacija srpskog identiteta. To je naročito neobično jer je mitsko, prehrišćansko poimanje sveta i dalje naveliko prisutno i prepoznatljivo u ovdašnjoj svakodnevici. Mnogi običaji vezani za određene predmete ili pojave, kao i verovanja u vezi sa tradicionalno najvažnijim događajima imaju očiglednu mitsku, a ne pravoslavno-hrišćansku osnovu. Kompleksni spoj nasleđa paganske religije i hrišćanstva, karakterističan za celu Istočnu Evropu, Mirča Elijade je nazvao kosmičko hrišćanstvo. Istorijsko i savremeno cenzurisanje ovog mitskog elementa, u okviru zvanična propagirane srpske duhovnosti, možda je jedan od razloga za tradicionalno haotično stanje srpskog društva.
Istraživanje utilitarne naučne fotografije i foto-amaterskih etnofotografija bilo je polazište za stvaranje ovog rada, koji se može tumačiti kao obrnuta etnografija. Fotografisani predmeti i scene pripadaju običnom, svakodnevnom vizuelnom iskustvu. Može se reći da su obični motivi ovih fotografija mitologizirani činom fotografisanja. Njima je dodato značenje zbog koga postaju podjednako važni kao i retki etnografski primerci. Za razliku od slikovite kič atrakcije amaterske etnofotografije, rad Srpska mitologija jeste eksplicitna politička poruka.
Bilo da se radi o politici ili o religiji, mitološki mehanizam je danas u funkciji ideologije. Iako elementi srpske mitologije prožimaju ove fotografije, ovaj rad nije nastao sa ciljem didaktičke ilustracije, već kao konstatacija da su savremena srpska mitomanija i kulturni diskontinuitet koji je prati u direktnoj vezi sa orkestriranim nepoznavanjem sopstvene istorije.
