Vernacular [2021-2023]

Vernacular 1: the language spoken by the ordinary people in a particular region; 2: a common style (e.g. in architecture) of a particular time, place or group.

The photographs depict details of urban space – fragments of facades, doors, graffiti, shop windows, inscriptions, signs, advertisements, sidewalks, etc. – without the usual main subject.

The changes that these objects and surfaces went through are related to their age and daily use, but also to vandalism, decoration, adaptation and street art. The continuous changing process of the city corresponds directly to the metaphysics of the passage of time. Work of architects and homeless people, tenants and craftsmen, street artists and vandals stand behind the vernacular details recorded on these surfaces. But combinations of these elements wouldn’t be possible outside of the almost absurd randomness of contemprary city life.

The photographs are conceived against the criticism of communal disorder in the sense of a certain aesthetic, often surreal and often invisible – which aims at the sublime experience of city life. The precisely formulated appearance of the photographs, whose central element, in the formal sense, is an undefined main subject, is related to the visual ambivalence of the city. Representations of accidental and intentional marks become layered signs of meaning. In contrast, the calm look of the photographs, characterized by specific framing, uniform lighting and the absence of people, contrasts with the accelerated confusion of the urban experience and is the result of a certain meditative approach. Vernakularno [2021-2023]
